A unique time-learning method for children below 7 y.o., using pictograms.
The Method & Technology :
Learning time is a direct function of the age of the subject : 1 hour of time is valued differently by a 3 year old child and an adult. For a 3 years old child, one hour is worth [1h/3 years], whilst for a 40 years old adult , it is worth [1h/40 years] , in other terms much less.
In other words, the capacity to learn time is a direct result of the ‘time lived’ by the subject since its birth.
For children below 7 years old, the capacity to learn the hour system is based on scenarios / activities giving the child the capacity to understand the notion of the Present, the Past and the Near Future.
The Pam Tim watch is designed for children below 7 years old who cannot read time from numbers : instead of digits (1 to 24), the watch’s display shows for each phase of the day a pictogram depicting some important activities : eating, sleeping … these pictograms will gradually give the child the organizational structure of time.
Pam Tim collaborated with the French Ministry of Education & the University of Tours (France) to design the display, the combination of pictograms.
Doctoral Thesis :
The development of children's representation of the pattern of school daily activities. Effects of the addition of visual temporal indications given by the Pam'Tim watch. Source
The performance of the technology is spectacular :
- For children between 4 and 5 : after 15 days using the watch, they become capable to classify the 3 phases of the day : morning, noon and afternoon ; they progressively become capable to classify their daytime activities (after dinner, sleep…).
- For children between 6 and 7 : they obtain an excellent capacity to manage their time within the day, because they can perfectly ‘locate’ in time the daily activities (eating, hygiene, study, play).
- For children above 7 : they become capable to project themselves in time, and plan their future activities, with an excellent sense of ‘time budget’: do I still have enough time now to do this or that? (implied, before eating, for example ...)
